Police Probe Viral Rape Claim After LPU Protest Turns Violent and Traffic Is Disrupted

Police are investigating an alleged sexual assault involving a Lovely Professional University student after a viral claim sparked an overnight protest that escalated into violence and a highway blockade in Phagwara, Punjab.

The incident began with messages circulating on social media alleging that a female student had been raped. The information spread rapidly through student networks, prompting students to gather near the university’s girls’ hostel during the early hours of Sunday.

Police initially described the allegation as unverified. Officials said they had not received confirmation of the reported crime when they first arrived at the university. The university administration also urged students not to believe what it described as misleading information circulating online.

The protest nevertheless expanded.

Students reportedly damaged windows and other property on campus. Flower pots and bricks were thrown, and reports said fires were started in parts of the university premises. The disturbance eventually reached the main entrance.

From there, protesters moved onto the highway outside the university and blocked traffic. The disruption affected the Phagwara-Jalandhar route and was also reported in connection with the Chandigarh-Amritsar National Highway.

Police forces were deployed to restore order. Kapurthala SSP Gaurav Toora reached the campus and spoke with students. He said authorities were listening to their complaints and working to resolve issues raised by them.

The incident took another turn as the police investigation developed. Later reports said authorities received a statement from a student and registered a case. DIG Jalandhar Range Naveen Singla said investigators would examine forensic evidence, CCTV footage and phone records.

The investigation is particularly significant because the allegation spread before the facts were publicly established. Investigators must now determine whether the alleged crime occurred, establish the circumstances and identify any person responsible if a criminal offence is proved.

The identity of any alleged accused has not been established in the available reporting, and the claims made through social media should not be treated as evidence on their own.

Police are also investigating the unrest. Damage to university property, possible arson and the blocking of a public highway could result in separate legal proceedings against people identified as responsible.

The university administration has asked students to remain calm and avoid disruptive activity. It has also urged students to stay inside their residences while authorities handle the situation.

The protests reportedly reflected wider concerns about university administration. Police officials said students complained that some of their issues were not being addressed satisfactorily.

Student safety and hostel management have emerged as major themes in the dispute. Later reports said students wanted changes in the management of women’s hostels, including stronger attention to safety arrangements.

These concerns are separate from the question of whether the alleged assault occurred. Nevertheless, the two issues have become connected in the public discussion surrounding the protest.

For university administrators, the episode presents a difficult communication challenge. They must provide students with enough verified information to maintain confidence without compromising a police investigation.

For students, the episode shows the consequences that can follow when serious allegations circulate without immediate verification. A large gathering can develop quickly, particularly when students believe their peers may be at risk.

For police, the task involves both investigation and crowd management. Officers must determine the facts while maintaining public order and preventing further damage.

The highway blockade added another dimension to the situation. Traffic on major intercity routes can involve private vehicles, buses, commercial vehicles and emergency traffic. Authorities therefore had to restore access as quickly as possible.

Reports indicated that the situation was brought under control after police intervention.

The investigation will now focus on evidence. CCTV cameras can potentially establish movements and timelines, while phone records may help investigators understand communications surrounding the allegation. Forensic material and witness statements may provide additional information.

The university is also expected to engage with student representatives regarding safety and administrative concerns.

The incident has attracted widespread attention because of the combination of a serious sexual-assault allegation, social-media rumours, student anger, property damage and disruption to a major highway.

However, the central allegation remains subject to investigation. Responsible reporting requires distinguishing between what students claimed, what was circulated online, what police initially knew and what investigators later discovered.

The case also reinforces the importance of using official channels when reporting serious crimes. Students who believe a crime has occurred should be encouraged to approach police and university authorities rather than relying solely on social-media messages.

As authorities continue their inquiry, the focus is expected to remain on establishing facts, protecting students and restoring normal operations at the university.
