Siddaramaiah May Step Down Soon, Congress High Command Discusses Karnataka Succession Plan

News

Karnataka politics witnessed dramatic developments after official sources indicated that Chief Minister Siddaramaiah may soon resign from his position. Reports suggest the decision has already been relayed to Cabinet colleagues, setting the stage for a major leadership transition within the Congress government.

The news has triggered intense discussions across political circles in Karnataka and Delhi. Though the Congress leadership has not issued a formal statement yet, party insiders claim that preparations for a change in leadership are progressing rapidly.

Siddaramaiah has been at the centre of Karnataka politics for decades and remains one of the Congress party’s strongest mass leaders in the state. Since returning as Chief Minister in 2023, he has led several welfare initiatives aimed at women, farmers, youth, and economically weaker sections.

However, speculation regarding a rotational chief ministership has persisted almost from the beginning of the Congress government’s tenure. Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, who played a key organisational role in the party’s election victory, has frequently been mentioned as the likely successor if a leadership transition takes place.

Sources now indicate that the long-discussed arrangement could finally be moving toward implementation. Cabinet ministers are believed to have been informed about the possible transition during internal meetings, although details remain confidential.

The development has created a wave of political activity in Bengaluru. Congress legislators have started arriving in the state capital amid expectations of important meetings involving senior leaders and observers from Delhi. Political observers believe the Congress high command wants to ensure that the transition happens smoothly without affecting governance.

For the Congress party, Karnataka holds immense strategic importance. It is currently the party’s strongest state government in South India, making political stability crucial ahead of upcoming electoral battles. Any sign of factionalism or internal conflict could provide ammunition to the opposition.

The BJP has already launched sharp attacks against the ruling Congress, accusing it of focusing more on internal power struggles than administration. Opposition leaders claimed the state government has been unstable due to ongoing uncertainty over leadership issues.

JD(S) leaders also criticised the Congress, stating that repeated speculation regarding leadership changes could distract the government from developmental priorities. According to opposition parties, Karnataka’s administration should not suffer because of internal political arrangements.

Despite the criticism, Congress leaders continue to publicly maintain that the party remains united. Ministers have repeatedly stated that any decision made by the high command would be accepted collectively. They have also praised Siddaramaiah’s contribution to governance and welfare implementation.

Political analysts believe the transition, if confirmed, will require careful management of caste and regional equations. Siddaramaiah commands significant influence among backward classes and rural communities, while Shivakumar enjoys strong support within the Vokkaliga community and party organisation.

The Congress leadership is expected to consider these social and political factors while finalising its next move. Analysts say maintaining unity between both camps will be essential to preserving the party’s electoral strength in Karnataka.

Meanwhile, supporters of Siddaramaiah have started organising meetings and discussions in different parts of the state. Some leaders have urged the high command to retain him as Chief Minister until the next election, arguing that his leadership has helped strengthen the party’s grassroots support.

If Siddaramaiah resigns officially, the Congress Legislature Party will meet to elect a new leader. Following that, the Governor will invite the selected leader to form the government and take oath as Chief Minister.

The political developments are expected to dominate Karnataka’s political landscape in the coming days. With speculation growing stronger every hour, all attention is now focused on the Congress leadership’s next announcement.
